The Core Difference
The i.MX 952 brings 4K video, a significantly stronger GPU, and functional safety to the i.MX 8M Plus price tier.

The i.MX 952 is where NXP is taking the high-end i.MX 8M Plus tier next. Same target applications, such as industrial HMI, medical devices, smart appliances, vision systems, but a newer platform built around things the 8M Plus can't do: 4K video, a 3x GPU step-up, and functional safety. For engineers starting a new design, the question isn't really whether the 952 is better. In most cases it is. The real question is where that matters for your application, and where the 8M Plus still makes sense.
Ezurio has worked with both platforms across HMI, medical, industrial automation, and vision designs, here's how we think about it.
The i.MX 952 brings 4K video, a significantly stronger GPU, and functional safety to the i.MX 8M Plus price tier.
The 8M Plus is a quad-core Cortex-A53 platform with an NPU, 1080p VPU, dual USB 3.0, and good display output. It's been a workhorse for HMI and vision products for years and it's in full production today with a BSP across Yocto, Buildroot, and Android. For designs already in the field or in final validation, it's a solid platform.
There are also real reasons to stick with it on new designs:
The i.MX 952 is the right starting point for new designs in this tier, especially if display quality, 4K video, or safety certification are important. It's the platform for customers who've been working around the 8M Plus's limits.
Choose the i.MX 952 when:
| Specification | Nitrogen8M Plus SMARC | Nitrogen952 SMARC | What It Means |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPU | 4x Cortex-A53 @ 1.8 GHz | Up to 4x Cortex-A55 @ 1.7 GHz | Newer CPU architecture offers improved efficiency and performance potential. |
| Graphics | Vivante GC7000UL, 16 GFLOPS | Arm Mali-G310, 54 GFLOPS | Approximately 3.4x theoretical GPU throughput for richer HMI and graphics. |
| AI Acceleration | 2.3 TOPS NPU | 2 eTOPS eIQ Neutron NPU | Both support edge AI. Different measurement methods prevent a direct TOPS comparison. |
| Video Processing | 1080p60 encode/decode | 4K60 decode, 4K30 encode | Higher-resolution video processing for multimedia and vision applications. |
| Display | HDMI 2.0a, MIPI-DSI, LVDS | 4K30 MIPI-DSI, 1080p LVDS | 8M Plus offers native HDMI flexibility; 952 targets modern display interfaces. |
| Connectivity & I/O | 2x GbE, USB 3.0, PCIe Gen3 | GbE + optional 2.5GbE, USB 2.0, PCIe Gen3 | 952 offers faster Ethernet potential, while 8M Plus retains USB 3.0. On 952, 2.5GbE and PCIe are multiplexed. |
A few things are making the i.MX 952 increasingly relevant for the customer base that's used the i.MX 8M Plus.
Display and video expectations are moving. Five years ago, a 1080p HMI on the 8M Plus was competitive. Today, end users expect 4K content in medical panels, industrial monitors, and food and beverage kiosks. The 8M Plus can still deliver a good 1080p quality, but the headroom is smaller than it used to be.
Safety certification is showing up more. It used to be that most industrial HMI and medical device designs could avoid functional safety certification at the silicon level. That's changing with IEC 62443, IEC 60601, and EU product safety regulations are all pushing toward hardware that can support a safety case. The i.MX 952 can. The i.MX 8M Plus can't.
Security is no longer an afterthought. EU Cyber Resilience Act compliance and medical device cybersecurity requirements are both pushing toward hardware-rooted security and long-term vulnerability management. The 8M Plus's CAAM architecture works, but the 952's EdgeLock Secure Enclave with PQC boot is a better foundation.
Both platforms target the same markets, such as industrial HMI, medical devices, smart appliances, building automation, but the right choice changes depending on what your product actually needs to do. A headless gateway and a 4K patient monitor are both "industrial embedded Linux," but they need completely different things from their processor. These are the six application types we see most often, and where each platform lands.
Medical Device HMI: i.MX 952 if 4k or safety requirements
If the design needs 4K display output or has to support a functional safety certification path, the 952 is the right call. Simpler 1080p clinical interfaces without safety requirements work fine on the 8M Plus.
Industrial Gateway either, lean i.MX 8M Plus
Headless or simple-display gateways that aggregate data and push to the cloud do not need 4K or a stronger GPU. Either platform handles this.
Smart appliance: either, 952 for Android or richer UI
Both work for food and beverage equipment HMIs. If you're running Android or want smooth animations on a glass panel, the 952's GPU headroom makes a visible difference. Simpler touchscreen UIs are well within the 8M Plus.
Multi-camera vision: i.MX i.MX 8M Plus
Designs that need two independent MIPI-CSI feeds are better used by the 8M Plus's dual-interface setup. The 952 has one configurable interface, which is workable for some layouts, limiting for others.
Commercial signage: either, lean 952 for 4K
For 4K content or multi-zone output from a single board, the 952 is the stronger choice. Standard 1080p single-display signage is well within the 8M Plus and it's available now.
Building automation: either, 952 if CAN-FD or safety needed
Room controllers and building panels with modest displays are a natural fit for the 8M Plus — proven BSP, in production, no overhead you don't need. The 952 makes sense if the design also needs CAN-FD or a safety certification.
We support both platforms. Our Nitrogen8M Plus SMARC is in active production with long-term availability. If it's right for your design, we'll support it.
Our Nitrogen952 SMARC brings the same approach: SMARC 2.2 form factor, integrated Wi-Fi 6/6E and Bluetooth 5.4 options, industrial temperature rating, and full BSP support across Yocto, Buildroot, Android, and QNX.
The SMARC 2.2 standard is worth calling out: a carrier board designed for the Nitrogen8M Plus SMARC is compatible with the Nitrogen952 SMARC. Moving to the next platform doesn't require a carrier board respin which means NRE and schedule savings for your next product.
Beyond hardware, we provide the support that actually helps you ship: BSP bringup assistance, carrier board design reviews, RF and antenna guidance, and worldwide regulatory certifications (FCC, IC, CE, UKCA, RCM, MIC, KC, and Bluetooth SIG). US-based manufacturing for customers with domestic supply chain requirements, with global capacity through our Ezurio footprint for EMEA and APAC.
The i.MX 8M Plus is a proven platform with a great user base. If you need USB 3.0, multiple camera inputs, or a product that ships now, it's still the right call. But for any new design starting today where 4K video, a stronger GPU, functional safety, or the i.MX 9 security architecture matters, the i.MX 952 is where we'd start. If you're evaluating either platform or working through a next-generation product path, our applications engineering team is ready to dig into your specific requirements. That's what we're here for.
