Our customers asked for a high performance, robust SOM that simplifies their BOM, has reliable connectivity, uses a standard form factor, and is globally certified. One with multiple software options, a proven security architecture, long term software support, and security fixes.

Our new Nitrogen8M Plus SMARC (What is SMARC?) is powered by NXP’s innovative i.MX 8M Plus processor, NXP PMIC PCA9450, and our Sona WiFi 6/6E and Bluetooth 5.3/5.4 wireless module families based on leading NXP and Infineon solutions, high performance LPDDR4 RAM, and eMMC storage. We combine this with our common SMARC carrier board; together they serve as a single board computer (SBC) that can speed your product to market. Alternately, work with us to create a custom carrier that fits your mechanical, environmental, temperature, and interface requirements.

Note: Versions of this product featuring the Sterling-LWB5+ are not recommended for new design (NRND). We recommend parts featuring our Sona IF573 (and soon featuring our Sona NX611) for new designs.

  • Powerful Heterogenous Multiprocessing: Up to 1.8 GHz quad-core Cortex-A53 microprocessor and 800 MHz Cortex-M7 microcontroller allow you to run Linux and an RTOS on dedicated, hardware-firewalled subsystems.
  • Dedicated Machine Learning: High-performance edge machine learning via an integrated neural processing unit, delivering up to 2.3 TOPS.
  • Diversity of Interfaces: Multiple display, network, data, audio and camera interfaces.
  • SMARC 2.1.1 Standard Form Factor: 82mm x 50mm SMARC edge connector form factor which includes onboard ethernet PHYs and a USB hub controller. One design supports multiple processor, memory, and wireless configurations.
  • Hardware Upgrade Roadmap: Build a product design that can easily be upgraded to the latest processors and wireless options as future Ezurio (formerly Laird Connectivity) SOMs based on the SMARC standard are released.

WiFi 6/6E + Bluetooth 5.3/5.4

Sona IF573 (or Sona NX611, coming soon) radio for excellent Wi-Fi and BT Classic / LE connectivity in difficult environments, both available with pre-certified antennas. Enterprise Wi-Fi support via WPA3-Enterprise for more secure and robust connections.

FAQ

What is the difference between part numbers SMARC_CAR and SMARC_CAR_BRD

Our Universal SMARC Carrier is orderable both as a standalone carrier board (SMARC_CAR_BRD) and as a kit (SMARC_CAR) complete with power, data, and antenna cable options. 

  • The part # SMARC_CAR option includes:
  • 1 x SMARC_CAR_BRD  (Main Carrier board that SMARC SOMs plug into) 
  • 1 x 5V Power Supply (USA plug connector only) 
  • 1 x DB9 Serial Cable 
  • 3 x EFB2471A3S-10MH4L (Tri-Band Wi-Fi Antennas) 
  • 2 x 001-0021 (Dual-Band Wi-Fi Antennas) 
  • 1 x Insert Card 

The part # SMARC_CAR_BRD is also purchasable on its own and this is the main carrier board. 

PLEASE NOTE – neither of these 2 part numbers include either a Nitrogen or Tungsten SMARC, they are purchased separately to meet the needs of your application. 

Which Ethernet PHY is used for the Nitrogen 8M Plus SMARC?

The Nitrogen 8M Plus SMARC has two KSZ9031RNX Gigabit Ethernet transceivers available for high-speed data transfers.  The KSZ9031RNX provides the Reduced Gigabit Media Independent Interface (RGMII) for direct connection to RGMII MACs in Gigabit Ethernet processors and switches for data transfer at 10/100/1000 Mbps.

How do I set the bootloader back to its default configuration?

The command "env erase" will restore defaults when executed in the bootloader.

How do I configure my network connection?

NMCLI should be utilized to configure network interfaces. 

What key is the M.2 slot on the Universal SMARC Carrier board?

The M.2 Slot on the Universal SMARC Carrier board is E key.
