Release Notes - Aurawave AW100 Firmware v1.3.0

Introduction

These release notes apply to the following Aurawave AW100 firmware:

  • v1.3.0, tag 1.3.0-63f2ff1 (reported by AT+CGMR)

They list the new features and the known issues of this version.

The commands named here are described in the Aurawave AW100 AT Command Specification for the same firmware version.

Firmware v1.3.0

Firmware v1.3.0 adds a USB Audio Class 2 interface with macOS support, a Broadcast Sink that searches and reconnects by itself, sink location and language selection, and 24 kHz broadcasts. Read Updating from prior versions before updating an AW100.

AT+CGMR reports the application version 1.3.0-63f2ff1. The build for the external antenna adds (EXT-ANT).

New Features

USB Audio Class 2

  • The USB audio interface is now USB Audio Class 2. USB audio works with Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS hosts.
  • New command AT+USBAUD. It reports the state of the USB audio streams, the host clock offset and the USB audio error counters.
  • The AW100 starts its USB interface when the cable is already connected at power-up or after a reset. This includes the restart that follows a firmware update.
  • The AW100 starts and runs its Bluetooth functions even when its USB interface cannot start.

Broadcast Sink

  • New command AT+PBSNKCONF. "LOC" sets the Audio Location the sink plays. "LANG" sets the language the sink prefers. Two sinks with locations 1 and 2 play the left and the right channel of one broadcast as a stereo pair. Both values are saved with AT+CONFSAVE.
  • New command AT+PBSNKSTATE. It reports the sink state (IDLE, STARTING, STREAMING, STOPPED, NOMATCH or SEARCHING) and the source the sink is on.
  • A started sink searches for its source until it finds it. It joins the source again by itself when the source returns after a loss. Only AT+PBSNKSTOP ends the search. AT+PBSNKSTART answers OK as soon as the search has started.
  • A sink saved with AT+CONFSAVE while started starts searching again at every power-up.
  • AT+PBSNKSTART has two formats. The first takes the source’s name, which matches as a prefix or, with <ExactOnly> set to 1, only exactly. The second takes the Broadcast ID. See the command entry in the AT Command Specification.
  • The sink accepts Broadcast Codes of 4 to 16 characters.
  • The sink decodes 16 kHz, 24 kHz and 48 kHz broadcasts with 10 ms frames, including the 24 kHz broadcasts of phones. A broadcast the sink cannot decode is reported as NOMATCH.
  • The sink joins mono broadcasts and broadcasts with a single stream. It prefers the stream at its own location.
  • The sink plays its stream on both outputs, left and right.
  • The sink fills lost or empty audio packets with concealed audio instead of silence.

Broadcast Source

  • New presets 4 and 5 for 24 kHz Standard Quality broadcasts: 4 is low latency (24_2_1) and 5 is high reliability (24_2_2).
  • The presets were redefined for reliable reception on phones and earbuds. Presets 0 and 4 send each audio frame 3 times. Presets 1, 2, 3 and 5 send each frame 5 times. All presets announce a presentation delay of 40 ms.
  • New subgroup tag AT+PBGRPCONF=<SourceID>,<SubgroupID>,"NAME",<Name>. The name is sent as the subgroup’s Program_Info, and AT+PBSNKEXPLORE shows it.
  • AT+PBSRCSTOP takes the broadcast off the air. Scanners no longer list a stopped source. AT+PBSRCSTART puts it back with the same Broadcast ID.
  • The Public Broadcast Announcement now carries the encryption and quality flags. Phones show an encrypted broadcast as encrypted and show its quality.

Device

  • The default device name is Aurawave- followed by the last four hex digits of the chip ID, for example Aurawave-4F6D. It is the Bluetooth name, the name the USB host shows and the name of every new source, including the factory source.
  • AT command names may be typed in upper or lower case.
  • New LED indications. The LED shows each source and sink state with its own color and blink rate. See the LED Indications chapter of the AT Command Specification.
  • An internal fault that clears is forgotten after 10 minutes of operation. Only three faults in quick succession restore the factory defaults.

Known Issues

SummaryDescription
24 kHz levelThe 24 kHz presets play 0.6 dB below the reference level and 1.6 dB above it at 100 Hz.
Source without audio streamsA sink started on a third-party source that announces a broadcast but sends no audio streams stays STARTING.
Configuration saveAT+CONFSAVE writes the flash each time it is sent, even when nothing changed. Send it only after a change.
Third Party IssueSome earbuds play only the first subgroup of a broadcast with two mono subgroups.

The previous known issue with USB audio on macOS hosts is fixed in this version.

Updating from prior versions

Update the AW100 with the AW100 Config Tool, as described in the AW100 Firmware Update Guide. The release contains two images for each AW100 build:

BoardImages
AW100 with internal antennaAurawave-AW100-DFU-v1.3.0-app-core.bin, Aurawave-AW100-DFU-v1.3.0-net-core.bin
AW100 with external antennaAurawave-AW100-DFU-v1.3.0-ext-ant-app-core.bin, Aurawave-AW100-DFU-v1.3.0-ext-ant-net-core.bin

Note: Load the images that match the antenna of the board. The external antenna images on a board with an internal antenna leave the AW100 without a working radio.

The saved source and sink configuration of a prior version is not kept by v1.3.0. At its first power-up after the update, the AW100 starts with the factory default source: it broadcasts as Aurawave-XXXX with preset 3. The sink is not started and its target is cleared. These settings are kept: the device name, the USB vendor ID and product ID, and the selected audio device. Configure the AW100 again and save the configuration with AT+CONFSAVE.

Software Components

Firmware v1.3.0 is built on the nRF Connect SDK 3.2.1. The license of the firmware is in LICENSE.txt of the release package. The third-party software it contains and their licenses are in NOTICE.txt.
