Our Embedded Philosophy: Why We Ship a Full Stack, Not Just Drivers

In the world of embedded wireless, some module manufacturers leave an astonishing amount of integration responsibility in their customers’ hands. Ezurio goes much further to make our customers’ projects a success.

Wireless Integration – Hitting Several Moving Targets at Once

After decades of embedded wireless design, Ezurio is keenly aware of the pain points associated with integrating a module into a host system. And having done it countless times ourselves, we know exactly what kinds of challenges OEMs face, often without much or any direct support from their hardware providers. Any integration project is, by its nature, a collection of moving parts that have to work in concert with each other, made more complex by the fact that those parts are also constantly changing. Application and kernel software is constantly being updated to address new features and patch fresh vulnerabilities. Hardware device drivers are regularly being patched to address bugs and improve device stability. Other device hardware, like access points and other network hardware, are changing too, potentially altering device behavior in ways designers may not expect. All of these have the possibility of introducing device failure, weakened performance, hangs and delays, and more.

So what do other wireless module manufacturers provide for customers? Often not much more than regular device driver updates. That doesn’t cut it for small teams responsible for managing the entire complexity of their hardware and software environment. For one, the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) now requires device makers to regularly roll out security updates, so OEMs in those markets must provide regular updates to their devices and manage any conflicts on a consistent basis. Host software/firmware and module software/firmware are likely developed by different manufacturers or the open-source community without awareness of each other, meaning integrators are likely the first person to find the incompatibility in testing.

In short: product development is the practice of pulling together multiple hardware and software products created and maintained by different organizations or teams and iterating your own product in a way that tries to keep all these components in harmony across the course of your whole lifecycle. It’s a lot of responsibility, and sticking on a particular kernel or software version is not a workable solution in a world of constantly emerging vulnerabilities and exposures.

This is why Ezurio does the heavy lifting for our customers by providing a complete software stack, and importantly a stack that is fully QA tested such that all our various packages and elements are fully validated to work with each other. This is all part of our commitment to helping our customers stay ahead of a changing security landscape and global open-source development with confidence. If our customers don’t get it right, WE didn’t get it right. And that extends to providing a meticulously tested full-stack offering that takes the burden of validation off of our customers so they can focus on providing unique value to their own customers.

A Full Stack, Not Just a Driver

There’s a lot to love about our EZ Connectivity Stack, which represents a complete Wi-Fi software value platform for Linux and Android with tools and features competitors can’t match. It’s beyond the scope of this post to detail everything about the EZ Connectivity Stack, but in short it represents:

  • Backports package with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in-kernel components
  • Adaptive World Mode framework (not available for all radios)
  • Radio-specific Firmware packages
  • Enhanced wpa_supplicant and hostapd
  • Enhanced Network Manager
  • Host Integration layers for Yocto and Buildroot
  • Tools to support regulatory testing

For more on the EZ Connectivity Stack, see our website and check out the full overview documentation.

There are several aspects of the EZ Connectivity Stack which lend a hand to our customers and give them peace of mind over maintaining the wireless integration into their host device:

  • Decoupled from Kernel – Because our driver is decoupled from the kernel and supports integration into 75+ kernel versions with our Backports package, OEMs can safely migrate between kernel versions without conflicts. Ezurio manages the translation from driver to kernel so engineers don’t need to monitor API changes upstream to move to a newer Linux version.
  • Reference Design Included – SDIO pins, GPIO, and power sequencing are all bundled per-product, per-release with the EZ Connectivity stack, so engineers don’t have to write hardware device trees from scratch.
  • Full Yocto Layer Provided – A single Yocto layer is provided for each product with all software recipes included and tuned for your chosen module.
  • Bi-Annual Security Releases – As part of each release, we include security fixes across all supported kernel versions. It’s another upstream challenge that our customers simply don’t have to deal with, all handled by our security experts.
  • Country Regulatory Matrix Updates – We pull in all updates to silicon vendor regulatory compliance blobs so that customers don’t have to. We track and report this via Regulatory Release Notes, so that customers looking to expand into different countries and regions have up-to-date power table availability as provided by the chipset maker and Ezurio – no additional work and research required.

There’s lots more to say about our EZ Connectivity Stack and its many components, but this last bit is a significant help to wireless integrators: the entirety of the stack is QA tested together, addressing the multiple moving targets that most often plague our customers’ development.

All Tested Together for Maximum Reliability

One of the most important things Ezurio does in software development is a rigorous, structured QA process. The tests we complete are varied, and are designed to address issues of multiple types, built from years of direct application and market experience:

  • Automated and manual validation testing on the release kernel version and target platforms
  • Regression testing to detect and resolve issues introduced by new features, silicon vendor patches, or kernel changes
  • Interoperability testing conducted with Cisco access points & enterprise environments, complemented by extensive security evaluations aligned with key Wi-Fi Alliance (WFA) requirements, including execution of the WFA provided vulnerability assessments, such as those targeting the KRACK and Fragment-and-Forge vulnerabilities
  • Compliance verification to ensure all changes meet applicable regulatory and certification requirements
  • Performance benchmarking including roam behavior, throughput, and connection stability

Testing all of these elements together creates an otherwise impossible portability and confidence for customers in their ongoing development. As the OS, silicon, and infrastructure providers continue to iterate, our Connectivity Stack is validated against those changes as a whole, giving our customers concrete results on expected behavior and compatibility with their host environment. Our detailed release notes capture the entirety of that testing and observed behavior, including any new issues observed, fixed bugs, and any underlying changes that developers need to be aware of. Our wireless modules are also tested directly on our system-on-modules, meaning customers of both have an extremely high degree of confidence that we’ve tested to their actual hardware under realistic conditions.

Our bi-annual release schedule means that customers only need to integrate the EZ Connectivity Stack once and can rely on Ezurio to provide continuous updates for their entire product lifecycle.

Fulfilling Our Mission: Simplifying Connectivity and Compute

Ezurio’s primary mission is straightforward: to take the complexity out of wireless connectivity and embedded compute, leveraging our decades of experience in the industry and our hard-learned lessons about the challenges integrators face. From the earliest days of Bluetooth clear through to the cutting edge of embedded AI, designing and deploying world-class solutions with superior RF performance and embedded intelligence. Our challenges are tightly aligned with our customers’ challenges, driving solutions that perform in mission-critical industries and challenging deployment environments. That’s why we do the risk assessment, testing, integration efforts and better-than-stock feature development to help our customers thrive and pass value on to their customers.

We provide the complete EZ Connectivity Stack to share this confidence with wireless integrators. Our EZ BSP provides a complete foundation for secure, reliable Linux software tooling that scales from design through manufacturing and field deployment throughout the entire product life cycle. And we provide additional tools such as our Ezurio MCP server that give OEMs access to the entirety of our knowledge base, serving as a truly informed assistant in developing with our entire product portfolio.
